The way that this process controlling the way inputs take place, the way the transformation process is undertaken and how outputs are created are the result of the operations management of the organisation and the level of tangibility may impact on the way the process is seen, but not on the fact this process take place. It is by understanding the operations and the processes then seeking to improve them with design control and implementers of the changes that the competitiveness of the operations can be increased. By controlling the processes the operations can become more effective. Those that design and control operations may not be called operations managers, but they fulfil this task. There are many examples of efficient operations. For example, Ikea use showrooms out of town where real estate is cheap and where bulky goods are bought they are collected by the customer from the warehouse. Not all customers will be external. Inside any operations there will be numerous smaller processes which are part of the larger whole, these tasks or subtasks are also transformation processes as every part of an organisation has some transformation process taking place. This may also be physical or intangible, such as the transformation of information, for example, accountants will transform financial data into reports for a range of users. In all cases there will also be support operations that enable the transformation process to take place as well as having their own processes, such as human resources management (HRM) where the internal customers may be the employees who received the process information that is needed for the payroll or who are recipients of training.
