The perception of non-profit making entities is often very different from commercial firms, with an assumption that they are inevitably inefficient (Brooks, 2006). The reality is somewhat different, while not-for-profit
organisations may not have pressure from shareholders to create profit they will have a finite level of resources to be used in order to attain their goal is (Kirk, 2006).
Management of non-profit making organisations includes the management of all resources to meet the organisations goal in the most effective and/or an
efficient manner. Although not commercial companies management of non-profit making organisations are increasingly having to compete in order to maintain their growth and funds (Chen and Jones, 2007). To gain
the resources needed, both funds and other resources such as labour, there is giving with resources will want to know that they are going to be used efficiently, in other
words is a non-profit making organisation is not efficient they are likely to lose out to others which are. These aspects are important in the ability of management to attract
funds and served the proposed beneficiaries. Competing for funds must be seen as highly important, it is not only individuals that will make donations as corporate philanthropy is increasing. In
the UK in 2003/4 corporate philanthropy amounted to more than $1.6 billion, nearly 1% of the donors pre-tax profits (Bruch and Walter, 2005).
There are also increasing levels of accountability, especially where the public purse is concerned, which are increasing the accounting burdens on non-profit organisations (McNee, 2005, Elliott and Elliott, 2007).
