There are numerous other management challenges the global leader faces, such as trade issues, environmental issues, security issues, human rights in developing countries, local and global social problems (Howard, 1998). Allard suggested the following skills and characteristics are essential to the international manager: * The ability to communicate and cooperate in another culture. This includes the ability to develop trust and teamwork with people from cultures that may be vastly different than ones own (Allard, 1995, p. 6). * Ability in more than one language, such as the skill to communicate in the language of the host country (Allard, 1995, p. 6). * It is imperative that the manager is able to fully understand and appreciate different cultures (Allard, 1995, p. 6). * Being aware of ones own biases, assumptions and even prejudices is imperative if the manager is to work effectively outside their home country (Allard, 1995, p. 6). * The ability to learn and integrate new knowledge, thinking, and behavior. This includes learning about the host countrys customs and practices in the work environment and incorporating these in ones management style (Allard, 1995, p. 6). All managers need to have excellent people skills, including communication.
