merit" (Dictionary.com, 2008). The issue with this is that discrimination is not always visible, is can be hidden within the systems of an organization and reflect social norms and values.
It is quite possible for discrimination to take place without those who are practicing it, and even those who are suffering it noticing, especially if it is due to the
dominant cultures remaining influential and established practices continuing. Discrimination may take place at any stage during the employment relationship process. It may start with the selection procedures and may
be present in the way promotion are granted, pay rises given and even in the way performance assessments take pace as well as in everyday treatment of employees.
Part of the problem is identifying the way it may be present, and the first strategy for dealing with discrimination is to put into
place practices to identify it. This may mean looking at basic data such as the demographic profile of the workforce and assessing whether or not it is representative of the
general or local population, (Grensing-Popha, 2001). If it is not there is a potential that there is discrimination taking place. It is not only the presence of the different minority
groups in the workforce that need to be considered, it is also important that jobs that undertake are considered, for example, failure of any of the minority groups to
