VALUE OF CULTURAL DIFFERENCES To be unique within a world of sameness is a quest sought by many people; however, it is by way of such an objective that one becomes labeled as selfish and intolerant of commonly accepted methods. This negative connotation of individualism - which is to maintain an independence from the norm - has cast an even darker meaning upon striving to achieve ones own distinctiveness within the workplace. When one relates this attitude with how the business environment has historically approached cultural and gender diversity, it is easy to see how the need for change has developed. How a given company goes about that change, however, is all-important to whether that change is good for the company or merely creates more problems. Clearly, the value of cultural differences carries with it an inherent strength for the entire workplace, inasmuch as people of varied backgrounds bring a unique perspective and many talents to the table. At no time do such disparities threaten to weaken the future workforce when one considers the number of people outside the realm of acceptable cultures who possess tremendous skills and talents that benefit the company.
