by K. Von Huben 9/2010 Please Introduction Managing an office can be a minefield of clashing personalities and differing expectations. This
paper considers two situations (a nasty public email and a poorly done report) and how a manager should handle them. Discussion In this first instance, a worker has sent an
email around to the entire office complaining about a co-worker: she alleges that he leaves trash in his cubicle and in the hallway; that he shouts across the tops of
the partitions to other co-workers; and that he makes strange noises to himself. She named the offender by name. By doing so, she has created a terrible situation for everyone
concerned. In general, email is problematic. Its a time-saver for some people but for others its a time suck; they waste a lot of time wading through it. Its also
a problem because good emails are short and to the point, so theres no room to explain ideas in detail to avoid having the recipient take offense. In short, a
person needs to be careful when using email. Here, it appears that the sender simply got fed up with her co-worker and opened fire. Its likely that she was doing
whats called "gunnysacking"-storing up a lot of little resentments and incidents in her imaginary gunny sack; suddenly, one little thing puts her over the edge and she dumps the entire
