and make sure that the contractor lives up to everything in the written agreement. When hiring a contractor, it is prudent to select three different contractors and interview them first.
After the interview and the submitted estimate, one should compare those to one another. At least, that is the traditional method of deciding which contractor to choose. Often, a contractor
will make an impression-good or bad-and then they will submit their estimates. There is a high and low estimate, and then there is the one in the middle. It is
often the case that the middle one is most reasonable. A high estimate may not be fair, but a low estimate usually indicates that the contractor is either not very
experienced or has some problems. Problems could be in the area of complaints but it might indicate that they simply need money fast. When a contractors terms are nontraditional
such as asking for more than the usual amount up front, or that they must use their own materials and things of that nature, one should be wary. After getting
three estimates, one might be skeptical of one or two or of all three. Therefore, it is prudent to ask around for the name of a good contractor. When a
contractor is recommended, it says much about the quality of the work. Often, the recommendation will be good, but sometimes recommendations fall short. Suppose someone recommends a contractor who completed
an addition to a business building but the project for hire involves building and landscaping too. The contractor says he will subcontract the landscaping and will even do some of
it himself. Yet, the result may not be stellar because this particular contractor may not be a good landscaper. One can see that when hiring someone who is recommended, that
