projects, organizations need good leaders and good managers. Maxwell1 said there are a dozen indicators that reveal a leader who is in trouble. The twelve issues are: "has poor
understanding of people; lacks imagination; has personal problems; passes the buck; feels secure and satisfied; is not organized; flies into rages; will not take a risk; is insecure and defensive;
stays inflexible; has no team spirit; and fights change."2 The organization needs to help the leader to change or they will need to replace the leader. As Maxwell3 points out,
the only person who can change himself is the person himself. Maxwell is very clear about the fact that the only way a leader can grow is by changing. He
also suggests "if you want to continue leading, you must continue changing."4 Too many leaders get stuck in a rut and become complacent, if not just plain lazy. As the
leader experiences ongoing personal changes, he or she will become a more effective and more successful change agent. That means the leader must be first in line, ahead of the
pack with creative and novel ideas for improving the organization. But, to be a successful change agent, the leader must understand the psychological requirements for the change and the technical
requirements of the change.5 More often than not, leaders are much better versed in the technical requirements than in the psychological, which has to do with emotions and attitudes. These
are scary to deal with but until the change agent deals with the psychological aspects of the change, no change will occur. One of the things leaders need to know
