Empathy and Trust Empathy and trust are closely related, although they may be seen as different dimensions within the role management and employment relationship task. Empathy and trust may be argued as necessary for an effective communication to take place, following on from the use of the concept within psychological counselling models (Morse et al, 2006). Trust is a relatively simple concept, but still difficult to define, it is where individual is able to place faith and belief in another, and may be defined by the dictionary as "the trait of believing in the honesty and reliability of others" (dictionary.com, 2008). There are a number of definitions of trust, but the important issue in terms of trust and empathy is the way in which trust can be gained, with empathy playing an important role in the way that the trait and characteristics which will allow another person to place faith and belief in another individual are created and maintained. Empathy is an interesting concept, from which can be difficult to define. Some of the earlier definitions come from Carl Rogers (1957), he stated that empathy, was the ability for the individual to see the world from the clients perspective as if it were their own, but still retaining the as if quality. This is an older definition of empathy within the nursing environment, which is one which appears to be aligned with many of the more welcome concepts of empathy, which also cross over with the concept of trust. More recently Olson and Hanchett (1997) have given a very clear and simple definition of empathy, defining empathy as the level of accuracy of our perceptions of others.
