by sudden changes, threats and ambiguity. In part, this is because the world has become more dangerous. New fears have created new rules for the workplace. It does appear that
it is more difficult to manage things in 2006 than it was in 1996. During the mid-1990s there was a great deal more money flowing in the workplace but since
that time, companies have tightened their belts. The expense accounts are gone as are the three martini lunches. After the nineties, 9/11 would take a toll financially and psychologically. In
many respects, due to downsizing and other factors, managers are being squeezed out and a new attitude has emerged. Interestingly, while the threat of keeping a job may be
something that managers are concerned with, this will be whittled away as the job market changes. It is believed that after boomers retire, there will be a drastic change in
the number of qualified candidates in upper management (Suller, 2000). It is because of this that managers must be groomed and retained. This is a change from the mentality of
the past decade where it seems as if there were far too many managers in organizations. Those numbers will decline. Other threats go to terrorism as well as terror
at work in the form of workplace violence. In fact, workplace violence was rarely seen but in the past several decades this is something that senior management has concerned itself
with. There have been cases of disgruntled employees coming back to work with guns and killing or hurting former coworkers. What can managers do to prevent such incidents from happening?
