Andrew Carnegie was a tough manager: his response to mining employee strikes for safer working conditions was to send in armed Pinkerton mercenaries with instructions to
shoot anyone refusing to abandon the strike. He later gave New York Carnegie Hall and he began planting libraries throughout the mining towns of Pennsylvania, but he was not
of a mind to speak rationally with any "underling." Much has changed regarding concepts of competent management and leadership over the past century.
As much as has changed in that time, however, it is likely that conditions will continue to change in the future. The Gilded Age
The "gilded age" of Americas history is one that was full of expectation and change. It was the time when the mystique of the American Dream spread
throughout the Western world and was promoted at home by the many examples of success that so many different types and kinds of individuals were able to achieve. It
was a time that the stock boy could work his way through the ranks of a company to become its president; it was a time that nearly anyone could begin
literally with nothing and achieve financial success and economic stability for his family. It also had its dark side, however. Those who
were able to take advantage of the rapid technological changes that were occurring and put them to sound business use meant to be the only ones doing so. Business
