There are several leadership theories, most of which are most applicable to differing environments and situations. The purpose here is to examine two verbal exchanges with a manager
and assess it in terms of one theory of leadership. The two theories used are Situational Leadership and Contingency Theory. Exchange 1: Negative
I work for a young, entrepreneurial company where "channels" exist but any individual is free to exercise whatever means s/he feels is necessary and appropriate to preserve the
flow of work that is seasonal, cyclical and crushingly heavy during the busy seasons. The workforce is comprised of professional business people escaping corporate life, retired teachers, burned out
marketers and those who have made mid-career changes originating in a variety of backgrounds. There is little internal accountability other than producing the documents that we provide on a
contract basis. As a senior member of the group, I frequently am charged with assisting new contractors learn required survival techniques and helping
with their work. Stress runs high during the busy season, and recently my manager decided we should have a talk about my lack of productivity. Fortunately, I had
