The pubic becomes very aware of the antagonism when a huge company goes out on strike and the services of that company stop. Many years ago. UPS did this. The public switched to other carriers and while that strike is seldom remembered today, it demonstrates how drastically wrong the relationship between unions and employers can go. There are many ways to improve the relationship on both sides. Role of Management The role of management has changed for the 21st century organization. Instead of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the work of employees, managers facilitate their work. Management is still about using resources to achieve the organizations goals and objectives in a cost-effective way (McCrimmon, 2010). Management is needed in any organization but the method and approach needs to change. As stated, management is about achieving goals that add the most value to the organization. That means the manager must be well-enough organized to identify the correct goals and to determine which activities represent the best way is of achieving them (McCrimmon, 2010). That would lead to prioritizing the activities that will be most likely to achieve the goals, i.e., which task is most important (McCrimmon, 2010). Based on these criteria, all employees should be able to manage themselves. Role of Unions According to the American Rights at Work organization (2012), unions are crucial for a strong democracy. They negotiate for fair wages and proper working conditions. This leads to a strong middle class.
