major points In this chapter, Fayol (1984) describes fourteen principles of management that are applicable to the task of management. The major points applicable to each principle are explained. The
following summation of the reading offers a brief explanation of each principle. The first principle, "Division of Work," refers to the task of specialization, that is, allocating to each worker
the same part of a task, which enables workers to increase their expertise at this task thereby increasing their output. The second principle, "Authority and Responsibility," refers to the right
of managers to issue orders and expect obedience. Management uses this principle when delivering rewards or penalties in order to encourage actions considered useful and discourage opposite actions (Fayol, 1984).
"Discipline," the third principle, is equated with obedience and respect. The next principle, "Unity of Command," indicates that every employee should be under the direction of only one manager. When dual
commands exist, Fayol describes how this leads to miscommunication, confusion, and dissatisfaction on the part of workers. "Unity of Direction" refers to one plan of action for an organization, with
one person providing the necessary leadership to accomplish this plan. The sixth principle, "Subordination of Individual Interest to General Interest," pertains to the idea that the "interest of one
