corps (Allen, 2002). All of these principles apply to todays management practice. A few decades later, in the late 1940s, W. Edwards Deming suggested a different set of principles
that were incorporated into what Deming called the 14 Points, or principles, of Management (Turner and Turner, 2000). These include: constancy of purpose, adopting a new philosophy of leadership and
management, evaluate quality in ways other than inspection, select vendors on criteria other than price, improve constantly, continuously train employees, drive out fear in the company, and break down
barriers between departments (Turner and Turner, 2000). If we were to explore Demings points in more detail, we would find most of Fayols principles embedded in the activities needed to
implement Demings, which he called points. Fincham (2007) identified the principles of management under the categories of basic management functions, characteristics of good managers, project management, project solving techniques, continuous
quality improvement, and managing change. Each category incorporates numerous activities and tasks (Fincham, 2007). This is a different way to look at the principles of management. Although Fayols
principles are phrased very differently than Demings and Fincham categorizes instead of providing a logical outline of just principles, they are, in fact, sets of principles when we think of
a principle as a way something is done. In this case, principles provide a guide for managers as well as a terse description of the managers job. A managers job
