Todays most successful organizations already have demonstrated the benefits of including creativity in the four primary functions of management: Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling. Planning has not been Boeings forte in the past, and it appears that it still represents a weak point in that it is planning and management of its supply chain issues that have delayed production and delivery of the new 787 Dreamliner. Company Background A $66 billion company, Boeing very nearly has returned to the place it was at the time of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Hoovers Online aptly describes the Boeing Company as the "800-pound gorilla of US aerospace" (Boeing Co., 2008). It is the worlds largest aerospace company, though only the second-leading manufacturer of large commercial jets behind European Airbus. Business in the US has been recovering slowly from the recession of 2001-2002. Travel has increased again, but at a time in which all businesses are highly cost-conscious and airline after US airline enters Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and aggressively cuts costs. The 787 Dreamliner has been the project that would have the potential for elevating Boeing above Airbus, but supply chain issues currently have delivery of the first Dreamliner up to a year after its originally planned delivery date.
