based on personal experience in the workplace will want to focus on one particular work experience. Perhaps the student has had experience working at a fast food restaurant. In examining
key elements of management-planning, organizing, directing and controlling-how are these supported at a restaurant such as McDonalds? First, it is important to define each of the functions and then address
the issue of technology specifically. Planning is the first key function. A manager at McDonalds must plan in terms of scheduling, accepting deliveries and even getting rid of garbage. Everything
must be timed precisely so planning is an essential ingredient for success. Further, there are larger plans that enter the picture such as planning for events and special promotions. Technology
helps to this end by offering the manager tools to use for the planning process. Cell phones and PDAs as well as a computer are essential for planning purposes. These
are all fine, but there are drawbacks to relying on technology. If data is lost, or there is a power failure, what has been planned may not be accessible. In
this instance, nothing is really lost. Plans that have been made can be recalled by memory, but it does mean that managers must be on task and not rely exclusively
on electronic devices to keep information. A manager may also want to make notes with a pad and paper. Organizing is also key to running a McDonalds restaurant. All necessary
items must be in stock. One can imagine that if one drives through a McDonalds and is told that they are out of pickles, the reception might not be good.
