Anytown, USA 00000 RE: Military surface mail management improvements Dear Ms. Greene: During times of international conflict, our troops
rely on the adequacy of their mail service as a source of morale building and to support their families during active service. The military depends on the efficiency of
the United States Postal Service (USPS) management process to provide mail service support for the military surface mail. Unfortunately, ineffective management process and the lack of an effective connection
between the USPS process and the Military Postal Service (MPS) and the problems in managing military surface mail has led to tremendous delays and an ineffective response to growing
demand during times of international conflict. This research study provides an overview of the problem of inefficiencies in the surface mail delivery system for the United States military
and proposes changes to management and processing at the USPS Oakland Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) to improve delivery outcomes. In conjunction with the report outcomes, the following management
and process changes can be implemented to improve mail delivery efficiencies, reduce costs and reduce delivery times: 1. Increase automation and reduce the use of manual mail processing; 2.
Increase manpower allocated to military surface mail distribution, especially in times of international conflict; 3. Shift scheduling to ensure improved manpower during times of expected mail increases (e.g. prior to
the holidays, after periods of increased troop deployment). These changes are in correlation with the findings in the current literature, the outcomes of a management/personnel survey, and
in relation to narrative data collected from management interviews, which identify some of the central problems in maintaining departmental efficiencies. I have enjoyed the opportunity to apply management
