When discussing the topic of man vs. God in Shelleys book, one almost always hears that creating Frankensteins monster is an indication of man trying to play God. But
is this really the issue that Mary Shelley was trying to address? This paper gives the surprising and interesting viewpoint on this topic. FRANKENSTEIN This novel was written
one year after Mary Shelley lost a child born prematurely. Having lost her own mother who died shortly after giving birth to her, Shelley was quite aware of death.
It is interesting to note in her novel she refers to Victor Frankensteins laboratory as a "workshop of filthy creation" which makes one believe Shelley was in fact describing
the womb. The fact that Mary Shelley had been surrounded by death in reality made her novel become awash in it also. The novel has been compared to
Hamlet as both Hamlet and Victor Frankenstein are obsessed with death. The story is traditional enough in scope that it bears the resemblance to a classic tale of man
attempting to defeat death. MAN VS. GOD? Mary Shelley was nineteen years old when she penned Frankenstein. What many people do not realize is that Mary was brought
up in a "freethought household" (Madigan 48) and her mother had already written about womens rights while her father "a noted Utilitarian philosopher and social critic, infamous in his day
for his excoriations of churches and clerics" (48). In other words, Shelley was not brought up in a household that necessarily had a great deal of regard as to
