realistic story of a mans struggle and demise. For the most part it is a story about the American Dream and the false nature of that dream for many. But, it is also a story that can be explicated from many different perspectives, envisioning many symbolic and intricate truths within the story of a man. As one critic indicates, it is "a deeply symbolic, expressionistic drama" (Topham). The following paper examines the relationship between man and nature in this story. Man and Nature in Death of a Salesman In this play the character of Willy seems to constantly, although subtly, be at odds with nature. He is a man who feels that through a symbolic manipulation of nature he can become successful. It is not a play that necessarily presents nature in any obvious way, but yet offers a man who feels, as a man, he has the right to take whatever he feels is his. He feels that through hard work and control of his environment he can become successful and this is really a depiction of mans power over nature, with disregard for nature. Part of this subtle truth can be seen when he envisions his brother, something he often does in his growing mental state. In this scene he envisions his brother telling his sons about how he had adventures and became a very rich man, a successful figure that Willy can only hope and dream about: " Why, boys, when I was seventeen I walked into the jungle, and when I was twenty-one I walked out. He laughs. And by God was I rich" (Miller 48). While this particular scene, or line, may not appear to be anything more than Willys delusional vision, it is also a very clear foundation for Willys dreams. ...
