The conflict could be symbolic as well as natural as see, for example, in Stephen Cranes short story "Open Boat" where many men are shipwrecked in a boat and they find some aspect of their identity through conflicting with the nature of the sea that cares nothing for the concerns or desires of man. Nature surrounds us and as such humanity is often in conflict with nature, often without even recognizing such truths. The following paper presents a hypothetical character and places them in a situation where they are at conflict with nature. Man and Nature: Conflict In presenting a character who is at odds with nature one can first envision a particular individual on some sort of a journey, creating the sense or image of a plot. That plot could involve nature as the major player in the plot, or it could be that nature is one element in the plot. Obviously conflict must take place, and conflict is generally something quite necessary to a plot: "Conflict adds excitement and suspense to a story. The conflict usually becomes clear to the beginning of a story" (Dowling). With this foundation in mind the paper now turns to illustrating a character conflict with nature. The character is a young woman who is on a camping trip with her family. This immediately puts the woman in a position where she is clearly surrounded by nature. At the beginning of her journey it could be a simple situation wherein she and her family are enjoying campfires, fishing, and taking hikes.
