Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, currently responsible for about 8,000 deaths annually. It is named for the location in which it most commonly begins, which
is the melanocyte cells that make the skin pigment melanin (Introduction, n.d.). Though melanoma is deadly and causes the greatest number of skin cancer-related deaths, it is also quite
treatable and curable when detected early. The incidence of melanoma is increasing significantly over time. In 1973, incidence of melanoma was 5.7
new cases per 100,000 people in the United States; thirty years later incidence had increased to 14.7 per 100,000 (Introduction, n.d.). As ozone depletion continues, incidence is expected to
continue to increase. Already, melanoma is the fastest-growing form of cancer (Horton, 2005). Causes The primary cause of melanoma is believed to
be excessive exposure to the sun, specifically to the suns ultraviolent radiation. This is the reason for expected increased incidence relative to depletion of the ozone layer of the
earths atmosphere. The ozone layer deflects much of the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun; with "holes" in the ozone layer over populated areas, people receive much greater amounts
of UV radiation than where the ozone layer is intact. Even where there are no particular problems with overhead ozone, people living and
working in areas where sun is intense are at greater risk of developing melanoma. Also, the pigment melanin - that responsible for giving skin a brown color - aids
in protection from sunburn. Those with less melanin, such as those with red or blonde hair, are at greater risk than those with great amounts of melanin present in
