greatest empires the world has ever seen was Mali. Mali once had a powerful king whose name was Sundiata. This empire was at its peak from A. D.
1235 until 1464 (849). In fact, this empire was so great it had "impressive universities, a good government and legal system, freedom and respect for women, and remarkable architecture,
art and crafts" although like many other civilizations it met with decline (Rochman 849). The Roman Empire, for example, was another great empire. It was one of
the greatest, in fact. The Roman Empire fell, yet much was taken from it in the form of literature, law, art, and architecture, which were all influenced by the
Romans. Although the greatness of the Mali Empire was ahead of its time in regard to such areas as freedom and respect for women, and the condition of the
government and legal system, these did not last on the continent of Africa. Unfortunately for the Africans and their descendents, the British decided to make slaves of them.
This lead to an Africa that suffered greatly in many ways. It may surprise many to note that Africa was not
a primitive culture when it was colonized. In fact, it was this myth that was generated by Europeans. They needed a reason to justify colonialism and slave trade.
The Songhay empire reached its height of excellence between the tenth and late-fifteenth centuries. During that time, a complex relationship existed between trade, politics and the Islamic religion
