Although lessening in recent years, wage disparities between males and females are still very much a reality. en are paid more than women in many cases even when the job duties are identical! According to Diesing (2004), women are compensated an average of thirty percent less than men performing the same job. The situation becomes even more frustrating when we realize that there are significant differences in pay in jobs that are typically occupied by all females verses those that are occupied by all males. These differences can be up to fifty percent lower for all-female jobs than that for comparable all-male jobs (Cohen and Huffman 2003). Promotions are few for women and female input into management decisions almost non-existent. Even when women do promote to become managers they are commonly paid less than male managers doing the same job. The reasons for these disparities obviously extend well back into history and to the patriarchal society we have yet to completely abandon. Acquiring an understanding of exactly how the discrepancies which are so apparent between mens and womens pay in the workplace can be aided both from an employment of the so-called radical feminist approach and an employment of the structural/functionalist approach first proposed by Radcliff-Brown and Evans-Pritchard for use in analyzing traditional societies. From a structural/functionalist approach we recognize that the phenomenal increase in technology which this country has experienced over the latter half of the twentieth century has resulted in an employee base which is skewed considerably in terms of their responsibilities and skills.
