past century. From a time when women could really only be wives, mothers, servants or prostitutes, to a time when women could take on almost any job possible, the society
of the United States, and the western world, has gone through many changes. At the same time, there are gender roles that still remain strongly intact, no matter the opportunities
that are now offered to men and women. The following paper compares and contrasts traditional gender roles in marriage, from the past, with those seen in the modern world.
Male and Female Roles In more ways than not, the roles of men and women in a marriage have changed. A hundred years ago women were expected to get
married and have children and if they did not do that they were clearly of a lower class, becoming servants or prostitutes. They did not work, unless forced to by
economic conditions of being lower class, and they were not given respect concerning their intelligence and worth. In Victorian times women, for example, in a marriage were expected to do
anything a husband required of them sexually. Women were often abused and mistreated and not until the 20th century did women even talk about such realities. In todays society sexuality
is very much an equal reality in a marriage. Men and women are expected to treat each other respectfully, and to care about one anothers sexual needs. This is something
not even discussed in the past within marriages. Sex was a duty of marriage in relationship to women, and it was a right of men. In relationship to bringing
in money, and tending to the house, in the past women stayed home, cooked, cleaned, shopped, managed the household, and managed the children. The man worked outside the home. This
