most: in leadership quality. Sadly, gender disparities in leadership are a reality in the workplace to this day. As with other areas of society, men and women tend to be
treated differently, culturally speaking, within the context of organizational leadership. Unfortunately, the organizations that allow this disparity to continue are undermining their own potential success, as studies increasingly show that
utilizing female perspectives on leadership can be instrumental in securing an advantage through quality leadership. This paragraph helps the student present an overview of male and female approaches to leadership.
Of course, it should be firmly stated that here is truly no such thing as "male and female leadership", but for the purposes of this paper, generalizations will be made
based upon observation and research that can serve to give one a broad and comprehensive view of certain gender-related tendencies pertaining to leadership. Increasingly, organizations are making use of a
"complementary style of leadership" which synthesizes male and female approaches instead of having them work at odds with other another (Nelton, 1991). This distinction is based upon the generalized tendency
that men tend to approach leadership in a task-oriented manner, whereas women approach the job in a people-oriented manner (Nelton, 1991; Rosener, 1990). In other words, women tend to utilize
transformational leadership qualities, working to transform the qualities of employees to bring their personal interests in line with organizational goals and to motive, while men tend to view business relations
as "transactions with subordinates" (Rosener, 1990). Sometimes, this latter approach is referred to as a "command and control" style of leadership, or an autocratic style (Boone, 1997). It may well
