which has a lesser degree of recognition is the practice of male stereotyping and the use of those stereotypes. Advertisers have benefited from the use, the misuse or
challenging of different types of stereotypes, the emergence and use of male stereotypes is not new, but the lack of study in this area compared to others reveals that potential
lack of understanding and appreciation of the significance of this type of stereotyping with specific attention to magazine advertising, where the advertisers are placing a great deal of reliance in
the images presented. In order to assess this, the first stage of any research paper will be to assess what is meant by gender stereotyping and then look at the
way it is taking place in advertising. The term stereotype is defined as "simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members
of a group" (Dictionary.com, 2010). This means that it is a over simplification of perceived characteristics that are associated with a specific group, therefore, gender stereotyping is dividing the
population into genders and then developing stereotypes based in those genders. Basic gender stereotyping starts with the general differences of genders and for males the characteristics of masculinity. Masculinity
is defined as "Something traditionally considered to be characteristic of a male" (Dictionary.com, 2010). This is a very subjective definition and indicates that this is what is associated with males,
