as well as a man who was self educated in many ways. He was, in the eyes of many, a very bitter and angry man in relationship to the white
man, but on the other hand he was also a man who consistently altered his opinion as his wisdom and his knowledge increased over the years. As such he may
have started out in power as a man who was incredibly angry and resentful to the white man and then became a man of deeper wisdom and understanding. He was
a complex man who was ultimately shot down in the prime of his life. The following paper examines his autobiography and another source in uncovering something about the man and
his works. Malcolm X In his work Malcolm X tells much of his life to Alex Haley and the reader is
made well aware of his childhood and his life up to a point. The important elements of his life are presented such as his time as a student, as a
child, and his hopes and dreams. As one author notes, "Malcolm was a smart, focused student" but then "when a favorite teacher told Malcolm his dream of becoming a lawyer
was no realistic goal for a nigger, Malcolm lost interest in school" and thus dropped out of school (Estate of Malcolm X, 2008). In his autobiography he illustrates the following
in these regards: "Malcolm...We all here like you, you know that. But youve got to be realistic about being a nigger. A lawyer-thats no realistic goal for a nigger. You
need to think about something you can be....The more I though afterwards about what he said, the more uneasy it made me....I drew away from white people" (X, 1987; 38).
