There are a variety of tools and strategies in each model. For the most part, executives and managers remain confused about exactly what they can do to reach high quality standards, that is, if they can define those standards. There are at least two written sets of standards that organizations can use in pursuing improvement. The ISO 9000 is a set of international standards. These were established in an effort to standardized quality criteria across borders. This is a set of standards, not a single standard. A company anywhere in the world can work towards ISO 9000 certification, which tells everyone else that their products or services meet certain standards of quality. There are also sets of standards within countries but more than 100 countries subscribe to the ISO 9000 standards. Another sought-after certification is the Malcolm Baldrige Award. The award is named after former U.S. Secretary of Commerce who believed in and promoted quality as the major key for success. This award has been around since 1987. Companies in all industries strive to achieve this award. It is not easy. There are numerous criteria, the process is long and requires meticulous documentation (as does ISO 9000), and a great deal of work. Malcolm Baldrige Award Concepts and Values There are seven categories in the criteria for this Award. These are: leadership, strategic planning, focus on customers and the market, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, human resource focus, process management, and organizational performance results (NIST, 2007).
