can be caused by four different protozoan species that all belong to the genus Plasmodium (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae) (CDC). These parasites are spread via
being bitten by an infected female Anopheles mosquito. In other words, malaria is caused by a variety of microscopic parasites that, once introduced into the body via a mosquito bite,
lodge in the liver, go through their life cycle, and cause the symptoms of malaria, frequently killing the host, as it accounts for over 1 million death per year (Greenwood,
et al 1487). The symptoms of malaria resemble those of other, less deadly, infections, and, also, they can occur days after the parasites are introduced into the bloodstream, or they
can occur even months later, which makes malaria difficult to diagnose (Freedman). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that travelers avoid areas where malaria is epidemic. Travelers are encouraged
to take both personal and environmental precautions against malaria, such as using insect repellent, which contains N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), and they should also wear "long sleeves and pants and footwear
that provides full coverage" and sleep in "properly screened or air-conditioned sleeping areas" (Freedman). Furthermore, taking prophylactic medications, such as chloroquine, is another recommended strategy for malaria. However, unfortunately, P.
