According to one source, "Malaria is a major international public health problem, causing 350-500 million infections worldwide and approximately 1 million deaths annually" (Arguin; Mali, 2008). The following paper offers
an overview of the disease. Malaria Malaria is what is known as an infectious disease and it is caused by a
parasite called Plasmodium (Davis; Shiel, 2008). "Malaria in humans is caused by one of four protozoan species of the genus Plasmodium: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, or P. malariae"
(Arguin; Mali, 2008). It infects the red blood cells of the individual (Davis; Shiel, 2008). The most serious of the four types is Plasmodium falciparum and this form is normally
very threatening to the life of one who contracts the disease (Davis; Shiel, 2008). The other three forms are normally far less serious and not nearly as life-threatening as the
first (Davis; Shiel, 2008). Malaria is normally transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito (Davis; Shiel, 2008). When the mosquito bites
a person they inject the parasites of malaria into the blood stream of the victim (Davis; Shiel, 2008). As mentioned, it attacks the red blood cells but apparently first to
the liver of the individual where the the parasites will mature, then moving on to the red blood cells (Davis; Shiel, 2008). What happens is that these parasites essentially sit
and wait in the red blood cells until a mosquito comes along and bites and infected person, taking on the parasite, and then passing it along in biting another human
being (Davis; Shiel, 2008). Aside from being transmitted, or passed along, through mosquitoes it appears as though humans can pass it along to one another in various ways. For example,
