societal construct of what is expected in a marriage, however, has changed significantly over time. Where at one time marriage was viewed as a sacred arrangement, as something that
was expected to endure until one or both spouses died, today marriage has become viewed as being practically expendable. Not surprisingly, divorce rates are high. In the U.S.,
in fact, some 4.1 divorces occur per 1000 inhabitants every year (Crouch and Arnold, 2009). The UK runs a close second with 3.36 divorces per 1000 inhabitants (Crouch and
Arnold, 2009). Counseling a couple before they ever actually tie the knot should be a mandatory requirement for getting a marriage license. Unfortunately, in most areas at least,
it is not. Never-the-less, the counselors role is critical both in pre-marriage counseling and in existing marriages which seem destined for divorce. Counselors can help couple sort through
potential issues and develop strategies to deal with those issues even before they develop. In many cases, in fact, counseling can be an important tool for preventing problems.
Likewise, counseling can be critical in helping a couple salvage a marriage that otherwise would likely fall apart. Question 1(a).
