Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page review of the injustices associated with the mental health arena as presented by Sue Estroff. Estroff approaches her subject from the eyes of the patient in the institutional setting and because of this she illuminates many aspects of the interaction between the mental health patient, mainstream society, and the mental health profession which are not typically explored in the professional literature. Asserts that the mentally ill are discriminated against in this country by both the general public and mental health professionals. Draws parallels between the scenarios which unfold in "Making It Crazy: An Ethnography of Psychiatric Clients in an American Community" and the popular fictional film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Concludes that patients, mental health professionals and the general public share in the many wrongs which are apparent in the mental health arena and that will only be through the cooperation of each that the injustices which Estroff is so adept at illustrating will be righted.
