passed away from cancer just the year before. The stroke was debilitating for my father, and even the most basic of functions became impossible for him to accomplish alone.
Being the oldest child in our family, it became incumbent upon me to make some very significant decisions. After much consideration
and deliberation, I decided that the best thing for my Dad was to put him into a nursing home. My siblings live out-of-state and I realized that for me
to accept the responsibility of caring for my father would result in the loss of my life entirely. I simply did not have the capability to care for my
Dad properly, and so I came to realize that the only logical solution was to put him in a nursing home where he would be properly cared for at all
times. And yet, despite realizing that the decision was indeed logical, it was gut-wrenching to say the least. Although my Dad
had lost the ability to speak with any clarity, the day I told my Dad about my decision I saw a look in his eyes that I can only describe
as sadness. My Dad quickly smiled and patted me on the back, but in my heart I knew that my decision would forever change the course of both our
lives. I think my Dad realized that I didnt have any other choice, but for either one of us to acknowledge the reality of the situation was very difficult.
