Perhaps it is safely stated that most people believe they are free to make their own choices, free to be who they desire to be, and essentially free individuals. However,
others argue that we are not free because of many different realities and conditions. This topic is the subject of "Making Sense of Your Freedom: Philosophy for the Perplexed" by
James W. Felt. The following paper provides a report of this book. Making Sense of Your Freedom In Felts book he first sets out to uncover, or define,
exactly what freedom means. He states that "Half the struggle of deciding whether you are free turns on settling on what you can possibly and reasonably mean by freedom" (Felt
1). At this point he goes on to illustrate what philosophers of old have defined freedom as meaning. In essence, freedom is primarily the freedom to choose, being that we,
as human beings, can make choices and thus possess freedom. Felt moves on to discuss how determinism is the belief that we are somehow determined to be a certain
way and thus have no freedom. One author notes that, "James Felt points out that determinism cannot be a statement of fact. It is a statement of faith to claim
that everything that happens, happens necessarily because of events that came before it" (Currie ). Felt also makes mention of cause and effect in these respects. But, in the end
he always comes back to the fact that we, as individuals, have very powerful freedom because we are able to make choices. If we were not free then we would
not have that ability or that option. In essence, "Our freedom is in the deciding what to do" (Currie). Throughout the book
