is no question that Verger needs to reconfigure its production floor. At the very least, the process should progress linearly so that there is no wasted movement and every step in the process takes the product closer to shipping. Shipping and receiving should be at or near opposite ends of the production process. Certainly there will be relocation and downtime costs, but those costs will be less now than in the future - as they would have been lower in the past had the alterations been made then. Mixing and holding operations have much greater capacity than does packaging. It is the process of transferring the toothpaste to tubes that keeps capacity at its current level. If the company needs to increase capacity on a permanent basis, it can plan to add another packaging machine when it relocates existing equipment. To preserve current shipping schedules, the company can add a second shift only for filling, hiring temporary workers to operate the filling machine during the additional hours. Regular, experienced employees still will handle ingredients and mixing. As the mixing and holding tanks have such great capacity, one shift should be able to mix enough product to supply the filling machine for two full shifts. This will increase the amount of product that the company has available to ship, without adversely affecting product quality by virtue of delayed ship dates for the product readied prior to the scheduled downtime.
