protests the futuristic intrusion of advertisements into his dreams by boasting that the 20th century had advertisements "only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball
games... and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky". The joke is a good one, precisely because of the extent to which it
is literally true. Throughout the 20th century, advertisements could be found everywhere throughout Western society, to the extent that most experts now consider the work of advertisers to be a
formative aspect of culture. In the 21st century, with the advent of internet technologies, the presence of ads has only increased. In fact, ads now act as something like a
currency, with many valuable online services such as e-mail and webhosting being offered for free, in exchange for the users viewing a few ads. Those who want to reduce the
prevalence of advertisements are often met with the argument that no ad can force someone to purchase a product... but is this really true? If ads can have a formative
impact upon our culture, doesnt it follow that theyre also capable of informing and influencing the decisions we make and the values we hold as a culture? One of the
