It is a novel that places animals in a position to take over and rule their own lives, but it is also a novel that speaks of ultimate disaster as well for nothing, in the end, truly goes right. One of the primary characters in this novel, and a character who is really only in the novel for a short time, is Old Major. The following paper examines how Old Major is a revolutionary leader. Old Major Old Major is the oldest and wisest of the animals on the farm it seems. As one critic notes, "This purebred of pigs is the kind, grand fatherly philosopher of change- an obvious metaphor for Karl Marx" (NovelGuide). Another critic also illustrates that he is like Karl Marx, stating, "He may be compared to Karl Marx, whose ideologies and writings eventually led to the Communist Revolution" (ClassicNotes). Still yet, another critic argues the same stating, " Major, who represents both Marx and Lenin, serves as the source of the ideals that the animals continue to uphold even after their pig leaders have betrayed them" (SparkNotes). When we first see Old Major we see that he is perhaps all these things and more, for we get the impression that the farm listens to him and believes him and looks up to him. "Word had gone round during the day that old Major, the prize Middle White Boar, had had a strange dream on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the other animals" (Orwell 25).
