paganism (Adherents.com, 2005). Beginning in the 1800s, however, five world religions were identified by comparative religion scholars: "Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism" (Adherents.com, 2005). Today, more than 4,300 different
faith groups have been identified in the world (Adherents.com, 2005). The largest five groups of world religions by number of adherents are: 1. Christianity: 2.1 billion (Adherents.com, 2005). 2. Islam:
1.3 billion (Adherents.com, 2005). 3. Hinduism: 900 million (Adherents.com, 2005). 4. Chinese traditional religion: 394 million (Adherents.com, 2005). 5. Buddhism: 376 million (Adherents.com, 2005). There are 1.1 billion individuals identified
