Major Colonial Grievances as Reflected in the US Constitution and its Amendments Research Compiled by 10/2010 Please The American Revolution occurred because of a long series of British wrongs. In essence, the colonists had four major grievances against the actions of the British government. These grievances were 1. virtual representation, 2. judgment by those other than our peers, 3. unjust taxation (taxation without representation or support), and 4. violation of our individual rights to control our persons and our home. They expressed these grievances in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights so that specific safeguards against the type of abuses that the colonists suffered at the hands of the British were assured for the future of the United States. The primary grievance that the colonists had while under British rule was that they were being governed by English representatives and not by themselves (Unger, 2006). The colonists in general were let down by the mother country from day one. The imperial government that was put in place was established to benefit the England, not them. The taxes that were demanded went to benefit England, not them. The laws that were put in place were not to protect the colonist but rather to insure that the colonists acted in a way that pleased England.
