the fighting was conducted on land. The standard method of frontal geographical warfare that was favored by the British was ultimately defeated by the guerrilla type tactics of the
colonists, who wisely made use of the expansive terrain, and the hiding places they afforded. The War of 1812 was fought on both land and sea, and the poor
US naval defense emphasized a need to develop more sophisticated nautical technology, if America was going to protect its shores from attack. The technology that powered the Industrial Revolution
was also evident in the American Civil War, which was fought from 1860 to 1864. Conduct of these battles relied heavily upon communications such as the telegraph, steamships, turrets,
and the development of such sophisticated weapons as the Gatling gun, or the first machine gun. However, following the Civil War, the evolution of military warfare appeared to be at
a standstill. While other nations were enthusiastically pursuing aggressive maritime strategies, the Department of the Navy and Congress appeared to have abandoned similar policies (Apt, 2002). However, when
America adopted the social philosophy of Manifest Destiny, the naval theories of Alfred Thayer Mahan were studied beginning in the 1870s (Apt, 2000). It was Mahan who convinced the
political establishment that in order for America to introduce itself as a major player on the world stage, it needed to establish itself as a competitive sea power (Apt, 2000).
