Many aspects of life influence political preference. Personal situations can affect political views, so can family, mass media, school and peers. Philip McGraw, TVs "Dr. Phil,"
stresses that every individual can - or should be able to - recall several points in their lives that they can point to as "defining moments." These instances stand
out in individuals lives and help shape who we are, but it is daily routine and what we are exposed to over time that has the greatest overall influence in
what we accept as right, normal, fair, desirable or any other positive quality. Family, mass media, school and peers all can have direct
and powerful influence on how individuals come to regard political ideology. Each will vary in its influence according to individuals circumstances, of course. As example, one who rarely
watches television news will be influenced less by mass media than one who totally relies on broadcast journalists to know what is happening in the world. The one who
defies all forms of authority images will be influenced less by school than the compliant one who seeks to please. The following sections support the thesis statement that family,
mass media, school and peers are "major agents of political socialization." Family Lundblad (2004) describes two of her "defining moments" in writing that
her earliest memory is that of her mother voting in a presidential election when Lundblad (2004) was only three years old. Lundblads (2004) mother signed her name and told
her daughter to wait, because "Mommys going to vote ... There can be no doubt that my mother marked her ballot for Adlai Stevenson (p. 14).
