advances, but one rule of thumb remains constant: vehicle maintenance is more convenient and less costly than the consequences of ignoring it. Manufacturers differ in the types of
materials they use in some instances - standard spark plugs will need to be replaced much more frequently than platinum plugs - so time schedules can vary not only between
types of vehicles but also between individual vehicles within the same class. The purpose here is to list the activities that should be
included in optimal vehicle maintenance. Recommendations focus on a 2002 GMC 4X4 truck. Though time schedules can vary, the basic activities of optimal maintenance will be the same
for this truck as for a new BMW (or any other make) passenger car. General Maintenance There are three things that an internal
combustion engine needs in order to operate: air, spark and fuel. Anything that interferes with the delivery of any of these necessary items will prevent the motor from
running at all, or from running at optimum efficiency. Fluids, tire inflation, braking system and basic safety equipment (i.e., windshield wipers) all contribute to the ability to operate the
vehicle safely. Engine oil is the lifeblood of a motor, the most expensive "replacement part" a vehicle can come to need because of
poor maintenance. Oil level should be checked weekly, and the oil and oil filter should be changes every 3,000 miles or every four months, whichever comes first. The
following table provides a chronology of an effective maintenance schedule. Certainly there are things that could be done that are not included in
