throughout the nation, there is what many believe to be a mainstream culture, a culture dominated by white individuals and their particular history. But, at the same time there are
numerous cultures and lifestyles in the nation. The following paper examines, tutorially, what the life and upbringing of an African American may well be and then discusses how that relates
or interacts with the mainstream, or dominant, culture of the nation. Mainstream America and Being African American The students particular experiences
with the differences and similarities are going to be far different than those of this particular writer and as such this writer cannot describe their experiences in any realistic fashion.
This writer, white and female, for example, has often found many differences in the dominant culture and their own particular ideals. This writer feels that the dominant culture is far
too materialistic and far too ignorant and has often been looked down upon, discriminated against, because they are different. This is because they have never presented themselves as the white
suburbia ideal, even though they were raised in that setting. For the African American it may be different for they may have been brought up in suburbia, perhaps in a
military setting, and never really experienced any obvious difference in the society they see and the society they belong to. They may drive the typical car, live in a typical
