crust. The author does juxtapose the urban and rural ways of life, creating a sense of criticism about wealth and the problems it brings. The idea that wealth does not make people happy comes out as the story of Carol Milford is told. With an almost Stepford Wives mentality, this novel takes the reader through a myriad of ups and downs and emotional roller coasters. In the end, the reader is left with pieces of the protagonists life to sort out. It is easy to conclude that Main Street provides a sense that there are layers of classes, and divisions by gender as well, and these things are hard to dispute. While in school, Carol daydreamed about someday changing things in a Prairie town (Lewis 21). She married a man by the name of Will Kennicott who is a doctor (Lewis 37). As they discuss life after marriage, knowing they will be living in a rural setting, Will tries to convince Carol to let go of her sophisticated ideas and just let the farmers be farmers (Lewis 37). She feels sorry for them though and wants to add something to the community (Lewis 37). In some way this resembles a generic theme where a big city person comes to an outlying area and wants to make change. During the 1970s, Oliver Wendell Douglass was a character who wanted badly to become a farmer and took his wife from the city where they both tried to live as the town folk do. This television situation comedy lasted awhile as different antics are shown each week. What is demonstrated is that city sophistication is quite different from rural life.
