mankind (the original is eight times longer than The Iliad and The Odyssey put together). It emanates from bhaarata (India) - the land of King Bharata, son of Duushyanta and
Shakuntalaa. Mahaabhaarata is one of the two itihaasa (historical account) scriptures of sanaatana dharma (Hindu-dharma), the other being the Raamaayana. It describes events that took place in ancient bhaarata around
5000 BCE. The main event was the appearance of Lord Krishna - the 8th avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu towards the end of dwaapara yuga (the penultimate age among the
four ages in a mahaayuga which corresponds to a complete cycle of the earths procession). Its most important features are its introduction of Lord Krishna, the historical account of the
kuru and paandu dynasties of approximately 5000 BCE, and the revelation of the Bhagavada Gita (Internet source). A more understandable description for Western thinking is presented in an interview with
French author Jean-Claude Carriere who adapted the great epic for the stage. "In Sanskrit Maha means great, or total. Bharata is, first, the name of a legendary sage,
second, the name of a family or clan. Thus the title of the epic can be understood as Great Epic of the Bharata Dynasty. But Bharata can also, by extension,
