The Magnet Hospital Recognition Program is one established by the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) in the early 1980s and has since grown to become synonymous with high-quality nursing care,
effective nurse management and support for evidence-based practice. Miami Valley Hospital gained Magnet certification in 2004 to become the first hospital in Dayton,
"the fifth in Ohio, and one of 115 hospitals nationally, to achieve this prestigious distinction that recognizes hospitals with outstanding nursing practice" (MVH Named Daytons First Magnet Hospital, 2004).
This distinction and the climate leading to receiving it can benefit Miami Valley Hospital well in developing and exercising a leadership position in operating according to the emerging knowledge of
evidence-based practice. The Magnet Recognition Program The full name of the program is Magnet Hospital Recognition Program for Excellence in Nursing Services.
Though the first task force charged with studying why nurses work in hospitals (and why they do not) was formed in the early 1980s, the program did not become an
official entity until 1993. Today it addresses an array of nursing issues. The goals of the program are: * "Promoting quality in a setting that supports professional practice;
* "Identifying excellence in the delivery of nursing services to patients/residents; and * "Disseminating best practices in nursing services" (Goals of the Magnet Program, 2007).
