form, and the contrasting characterizations given to the titular old man and the spider woman who appears later. While the old man seems for all intents and purposes to be
a legitimate celestial being, his realistic human traits prevent others from easily categorizing and understanding him, as they can do with the more simplistic figure of the spider woman. Given
the flavor of the rest of Marquez oeuvre, this also seems to suggest the tendency to prefer an ordered and logical presentation of magic as might be found in a
traditional narrative to the more realistic yet potentially less narratively satisfying form of magic found in works like Marquez. The old mans initial appearance foreshadows the ambiguity with which
his character will ultimately be treated. Despite being a supernatural figure, the old mans wings are a hindrance; he wallows and struggles "face down in the mud", unable to rise
under his own power (Marquez, 2002). Moreover, he is described as "pitiful", balding with broken teeth, and his wings are "dirty and half-plucked" (Marquez, 2002). Later, the old man will
perform miracles for the crowds that assemble to see him, but the miracles are not what they expect; a blind man recovers not his sight but his lost teeth for
instance (Marquez, 2002). In other words, the old mans angelic nature is offset by the reality of his existence; he has features that are both divine and pitifully human. He
is difficult for the pilgrims to categorize and comprehend because while they are drawn to his angelic qualities, they are repulsed by his human qualities. Ultimately, the pilgrims are offered
