Bernard Malamuds short story The Magic Barrel is an intriguing and magical story of a man who is looking for a wife. While it may appear as a relatively simple
story involving a matchmaker, there are some mysterious elements or aspects of the story that make it feel like there are truly some magical elements in place. The following paper
examines the magical aspects of the story by Malamud. Magic in The Magic Barrel by Malamud In this story Finkle, who is studying to be a rabbi, seeks the
help of Salzman, a matchmaker, in the hopes of finding a wife. When the reader first meets Salzman he is offered up as something of a frail and simple man:
"His voice, his lips, his wisp of beard, his bony fingers were animated, but give him a moment of repose and his mild blue eyes revealed a depth of sadness,
a characteristic that put Leo a little at ease although the situation, for him, was inherently tense" (Malamud). The setting is a bit dark and depressed as Salzman appears
to be a weak little man and Finkle a man who appears to be lacking in true depth or a desire to compromise in the women Salzman presents. There is
