It is a story that clearly reflects ideals of paganism and Christianity, chivalry and human nature. It is an intriguing story and truly allows the reader to see into Medieval
times. One of the elements in this story is magic. The following paper examines how Medieval magic is seen in this story. Magic in Sir Gawain and the
Green Knight As noted in the introduction, there are elements of paganism and elements of Christianity in this story. This illustrates that it was essentially written at a time when
Christianity was beginning to be strong, yet a time when magic was also considered very real and powerful. There was no sense that the two could not exist at the
same time, as would later be the case in the Christian religion. Magic was accepted and people believed strongly in magic. If one looks at the Arthurian legends, of which
Gawain always seems to have a part, there is much magic such as the Lady of the Lake who brings for the Arthurs sword. She is a woman based on
legendary female nymphs or fairies of the water. There is clearly such realities in "Merlins magic" and there are elements of magic in Arthurs half sister who is a witch
it seems, and along with these stories there is always Gawain, illustrating a foundation of magic in the times, and in the stories concerning Gawain (Keuchenius). In further speaking
of the Arthurian legends, another author, in examining one story, speaks of how "The magical elements are embedded within an overt contest of honor and prowess" as they relate to
the knights (Hahn). Gawain is clearly one of his knights, and in this particular story of the Green Knight it is clear that this is the beginning of his time
